Short CV

Sonja Geiger studied psychology at the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin and received her diploma in 2004. Subsequently, she did her doctorate degree in cognitive psychology at Universität Potsdam in 2007 followed by a Post-Doc phase at the Cognitive Science Lab of the University of Western Australia, Perth Australia. In January this year she handed in her Habilitation thesis at the TU Berlin titled “Changing ways to foster sustainable consumption”.

She embarked on the path towards environmental psychology working for several years for the NGO „Amigos de la tierra“ (FOEI Argentina) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she lived from 2008 to 2012. With her research experience and knowledge of environmental issues in South America she contributed to a first research project on environment and psychology at the UBA (Universidad de Buenos Aires).

Sonja Geiger gained further teaching experience at various universities between 2011 and 2014 (UIA, Buenos Aires, SRH Berlin). Her teaching duties comprised quantitative empiric methods in the social sciences, basic general psychology as well as courses on environmental psychology with regard to sustainability and society.

She has worked for the department since March 2015, first on the research project Education for Sustainable Consumption through Mindfulness Training (BiNKA) funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Between 2015- 2017 she has also been working for the Department of individual differences and psychological assessment of the University of Ulm in the living lab "Sustainable transformation of the textile industry in Dietenheim". Since September 2018 she has been co-leading the research project “ReZeitkon”, (Time rebound, time wealth and sustainable consumption -link to time-rebound.de). In this Project she empirically assesses time wealth and time-based rebound effects and evaluates participative interventions designed to promote time wealth while avoiding negative environmental effects.

Current research interests

  • Psychological behavioral models of sustainable consumption behaviors

  •  Emotional determinants of sustainable lifestyles: compassion, empathy and mindfulness, emotional involvement

  •  Health aspects of sustainable lifestyles: materialism, mindfulness and well-being

  •  Psychological time perception and sustainability: time pressure and present-centeredness

  • Judgment and decision making in environmental relevant situations (behavioral economics)

  • Multivariate methods of data collection and analysis (quantitative statistics, latent data modelling)

  • Test construction, measurement of complex latent constructs (e.g., consumption behavior, environmental awareness)

  • Participatory research design (co-design practices, online communities, citizen science)
